A tree form of the common Cistena Plum shrub, this small tree only reaches 14’ tall by 12’ wide at maturity. With very low maintenance, its purple foliage and pink Spring flowers are a great choice brighten up small patio gardens, planter boxes, or flowerbeds.

Small Evergreens for Colorado Climates Include:

Alberta Spruce

This tree is a very slow growing cone shaped conifer that does best in Eastern or Northern exposure. It stays small with an average height of 6’ to 8’ and width of about 3’, but can be pruned to maintain any shape or size.

Tannenbaum Mugo Pine

Different from Mugo Pine shrubs, this small conical tree will grow 8’ to 10’ tall and 4’ to 6’ wide. It has a dark green color throughout the year and works well in small areas and near patios.

Weeping Norway Spruce

This green spruce with its weeping growth habit will only grow as tall as it is staked. New growth and branches weep down creating a very unique shape for small areas and rock gardens.

Baby Blue Eyes Spruce

The smallest of the Blue Spruce cultivars, this tree only grows to about 10’ tall. It’s an excellent choice for small yards because of its size, but also provides great texture and color with its greenery.

Hick’s Yew

This tree is has soft dark needles and prefers shade with Eastern or Northern Exposures. It has columnar growth and only reaches approximately 8’ tall. This makes it a great plant for edging and yard barriers.

Lilacs’ fragrant flowers are traditional staple of many outdoor spaces. They come in a variety of sizes growing anywhere from 4’ to 12’ tall. The blossoms vary in color including purple, magenta, pink, white, blue, and even striped. Drought tolerant and hardy, a lilac is a great addition to any yard.

Ninebark

Ninebark is a plant that is native to North America and grows fast. It has flowers that range from pink to white, shaped like tufts, and blooms in late Spring to early Summer. It’s dark ruffled foliage adds great texture and color contrast in the Fall when it turns to a pumpkin orange.

Viburnum

There are many varieties and species of Viburnum including the very popular Snowball Bush. Viburnum are very versatile shrubs and are able to tolerate a broad spectrum of soil, light, and moisture conditions.

Rose of Sharon

The Rose of Sharon is a very popular and easy to maintain shrub. It grows up to 8’ tall and has impressive flowers from Summer through Fall.

A Colorado native, these bushes have beautiful Fall colors along with fragrant, white flowers in Spring. They are drought tolerant and hardy. They vary in size and at maturity grow from 6’ to 10’ tall depending on variety. The berries are red and are a favorite for birds.

Bristlecone Pine

A slower growing pine, the Bristlecone has a unique texture and interesting growth habits. At maturity, it grows to 40’ tall and 30’ wide. Bristlecone is one of the longest lived species with the oldest trees dating more than 4,000 years.

Ornamental Pear

This tree provides three-season interest with burst a of white flowers in the early Spring, a lush uniform crown through the Summer, and spectacular Fall colors ranging from orange to bronze to red. Most varieties can grow to 35’ tall, varying in width from 8’ to 25’, making the pear very versatile and able to fit in almost every yard, no matter how small.

Flowering Crabapple

For Spring color, crabapples are tough to beat. Profuse flowers in the mid-spring range in colors from bright white to every shade of pink and red. Leaf colors differ as well, adding color contrast to your yard even when flowers are not blooming.

Golden Rain Tree

The Golden Rain Tree is one of the few late blooming trees that display spikes of yellow blooms in late Summer to Fall. It’s a larger flowering tree that grows up to 40’ tall and 20’ to 30’ wide.

Hawthorne

Hawthorne is a durable, drought-tolerant tree with unique horizontal and arching growth habits. The different varieties range in size from 15’ to 25’ tall and 12’ to 25’ wide. Flower colors differ as well, from the standard whites to the double pink of the Paul’s Scarlet variety.

Tulip Tree

An refreshingly unique and tall flowering species, the Tulip Tree produces interesting, large tulip-shaped yellow flowers with orange centers in the late Spring. This tree can quickly grow 70’ to 80’ tall and 40’ wide, so it’s best placed in larger spaces.

Ornamental Plum

Most varieties of this non-fruit-bearing plum tree are dark leaved and bloom with light pink or white flowers in very early Spring. The lush purple foliage adds excellent color contrast to a green landscape.

This tree adds beautiful color variety to your landscaping. In the Fall the leaves turn a dark purple while the interior leaves turn a bright orange-yellow. It grows very quickly and at maturity can reach 50’ tall and 35’ to 45’ wide.

The Honey Locust is a durable, drought-tolerant tree with small leaflets that make for a fern-like texture and dappled shade. It is slightly smaller than most deciduous shade trees and is great for smaller yards. It grows to be around 35’ tall.

Greenspire Linden

This tree is known for its sweet fragrance from the blooms that appear in June and July. It tends to grow in a perfect pyramid shape and generally reaches 45’ tall and 35’ wide with dense foliage. It’s large, heart-shaped leaves turn bright yellow in the Fall.

This tree is a great option for poor growing conditions because it is highly adaptable to conditions that are very wet or very dry with poor soil. It grows quickly and has small leaves that create a graceful umbrella shape and can be 40’ to 50’ tall.
