What Type of Grass Is Best for Colorado?
In Colorado we need to use cool season grasses. By definition they grow best between temperatures of 55-85 degrees. We also have to take into effect our dry summers. So the best type of grass for us is a drought tolerant cool season grass.
Cool season grasses include Kentucky Blue Grass, Fescues, Rye Grass, and Bent Grass. Bent grass is not typically used here since it does better in more humid environments. Fescues and Rye Grass typically have better drought tolerance.
Kentucky Blue Grass is the grass of choice for rich green looking lawns but has earned a bad reputation for the amount of water it needs, but there are new strains of Blue Grass available through seed companies that are on par with Rye and Fescue.
One such product that we carry at Nick’s Garden Center is the Blue Carpet Blend by Earth Carpet has 4-5 varieties of blue grass developed to be more drought and traffic tolerant than your standard Kentucky Blue Grass.
