Kickoff the chile season with us at Nick’s!

Discover new ideas to put to use at home and learn about  all the varieties Nick’s has to offer:

Nick’s Annual Green Chile Contest

Do you have an awesome recipe for Green Chile? 

Enter your best Green Chile for a chance to win cash prizes!
1st Place $200 2nd Place $100 3rd Place $50

Judging starts at 1:15. Winners announced at 2:00 pm.
Contest Limited to first 20 contestant.

Contest Rules:

  1. You must bring the green chile prepared for judges to sample.

  2.  The green chile must be in a crockpot or proper container to hold proper temperature.

  3. All entries must be at Nick’s by 1pm.
  4. You can take your container or crockpot home at 2:30 pm. We may transfer your chile to another container for sampling.
  5. We will have you fill out a short entry form when you arrive. Please have a copy of your recipe printed to Share with Nick’s. The 1st place winner will be added to Nick’s Chile Hall of Flame and the recipe will be shared by Nick’s online and in store.
  6. NO contestants affiliated with Nick’s Garden Center or related to the owners.
  7. Entry participant must be present to enter and claim prize.

 

Chile judges will be evaluating the Following:

TASTE: Taste, above all else is the most important factor. The taste should consist of the combination of the meat, peppers, spices, etc, with no particular ingredient being dominant, but rather a blend of the flavors.

CONSISTENCY: Chile must have a good ratio between sauce and meat. It should not be dry, watery, grainy, lumpy, or greasy.

AROMA: Chile should smell good. This also indicates what is in store when you taste it.

COLOR: Chile should look appetizing. Reddish brown is generally accepted as good.

BITE: Bite or after taste is the heat created by the various type of chile peppers and chile spices.

*Vegan, Organic and vegetarian recipes are welcome but will be judged collectively with traditional recipes.

It’s Simple: Bring your best rendition of Green Chile a.k.a. “Chile Verde” and impress the judges with your tastiest recipe.

This is a contest for the best tasting GREEN CHILE prepared at your home and brought to Nick’s for judging by 1pm on 9/10/16. No Chili Bean Recipes

Judging will be by Nick’s representatives.

  • Contest is for the most flavorful Salsa using fresh complementing ingredients.

  • This is not a contest for the hottest salsa but for the freshest and most flavorful.

  • You must bring prepared salsa for judges to sample.

  • All entries must be at Nick’s by 3pm.

  • We will have you fill out a short entry form when you arrive. Please have a copy of your recipe printed to Share with Nick’s. The 1st place winner will be added to Nick’s Salsa Hall of Flame and the recipe will be shared by Nick’s online and in store.

  • NO contestants affiliated with Nick’s Garden Center or related to the owners.

APRIL 16TH:  HOW TO GROW PRIZEWINNING PRODUCE

FREE, 12 PM TO 1 PM

Jodi Torpey will teach the tricks for growing the bigger, tastiest and best looking vegetables.  Discover how to choose the top varieties, schedule planting dates and grow a healthy garden.  Jodi Torpey is an award winning vegetable gardener, Denver master gardener and author of Blue Ribbon Vegetable Gardening and The Colorado Gardeners’ Companion.  Both books will be available for sale at the event.

Nick’s will be giving 10 lucky winners a copy of her book!

April 23rd:  No More Kentucky Bluegrass!  Plant Dog Tuff Low Water Grass

Plant Guru, Kelly Grummons will discuss this new Plant Select introduction.  Extremely low water, dog urine-resistant grass will be available at Nick’s this Spring!  Kelly will demonstrate the techniques for converting your thirsty lawn into one that requires just a fraction of the water.


April 23rd  Tomato Tutelage

Free, 10:30 am

Plant Guru, Kelly Grummons will take the mystery out of growing good tomatoes in our area.  Kelly will discuss garden soil preparation, culture in the ground and in pots, nutrition, tomato pests and diseases.

  • Don’t miss our Spring Open House. Our garden center and greenhouses are bursting with color. New plant varieties and the newest garden products are on display. It always has been one of our favorite events throughout the season and one you won’t want to miss.
